Frequently asked questions about EPL 5-in-1 Hair Removal
What do you mean by 5-in-1 Hair Removal?
Our Phaser EPL Dual Phase Pulse technology delivers up to 150 Joules of Energy and a wavelength of up to 1200nm in one shot. What does that mean? Most EPL units on the market today only reach a max of 50 Joules of energy, meaning they are not capable of destroying both the bulb and hair follicle to achieve permanent hair removal. With our Phaser EPL Dual Phase Pulse we are not only able to destroy the bulb and hair follicle, but each pulse will target age spots, liver spots, fine lines and wrinkles, acne and small spider veins.
How does Permanent Hair Removal work?
The Phaser EPL has a unique Dual Phase Pulse which is designed to provide more efficient destruction of hair follicles than a standard EPL. It removes hair by sending out high-energy light pulses. There are actually two beams of light, one yellow and one red, which together affect both the existing hair and the follicles where the hair grows.
What is Dual phase technology?
Phaser EPL has a unique Dual Phase Pulse which is designed to provide destruction of both the bulge and the bulb for ultimate hair removal results. The primary phase is a fast rise sculptured pulse allowing 50% of the energy to be transferred to tissue in the optimum time interval to focus on a flowing blood target and ultimately destruction of the bulge. This effect is essential for the removal of finer and lighter colored hairs. The secondary phase of the pulse is an extended tail of energy to enhance the thermal increase in the hair bulb without increasing the temperature of the epidermis. This enables the coarser and more stubborn hairs to be treated efficiently.
How long will the EPL hair removal procedure take?
Each EPL pulse treats about 2 inches of skin surface area, which can contain up to 100 hair follicles. The amount of time needed to treat a certain area depends on the size of area being treated. Treatments on the back or legs can take up to one hour, while treatments of the underarms and bikini generally take 15 minutes. The upper lip and chin can be done in less than 5 minutes!
Are there any side effects?
The treated area may become slightly pink or red afterwards. This will go away within a few minutes to a few hours and in some rare cases a few days.
Is the EPL treatment painful?
The treatment is generally not painful and is well tolerated. Some patients describe the treatment as a sensation like the snap of a rubber band - a lot less painful than plucking or waxing. Our Licensed Medical Esthetician will work diligently to help you achieve the look you want with as little pain as possible.
Are the results of EPL hair removal permanent?
Everyone will need at least 4 to 7 treatments for effective permanent hair removal. The fabulous thing is that the remaining hair returns lighter and softer. Results vary depending on skin and hair type. Because hair grows at different stages, and EPL or Laser can only target hairs in the Anagen stage of growth, it is almost impossible to guarantee that all hair will be removed. Only 30% of hairs are in the Anagen stage at any one time. However, Ivory does have a maintenance package available for those customers who need supplementary treatments after they have finished their package of treatments. Maintenance is 50% of the regular price of either a single session or a package.
Who is a candidate for EPL hair removal?
If you are concerned about unwanted hair, you are probably a good candidate for EPL hair removal. The only limitation to this procedure is hair color. Because the EPL is attracted to the pigment in the hair follicle, it is not effective white or gray hairs.
What areas can be done?
Almost any area of the body can be treated. Please call or visit us if you have any questions regarding a certain area.
Are EPL treatments safe?
Yes, EPL treatments are completely safe. EPLs generate non-ionizing energy that does not result in the mutation of cells. Medical EPL applications have been continuously expanding since the mid 1960s. This increased use of EPLs is due primarily to the inherent safety and ability to selectively target specified tissue without harming surrounding structures. Plus, our LME uses the latest, most effective and safest equipment. At IVORY, we are committed to performing only those treatments that are clinically proven to eliminate unwanted hair. Our LME has been specifically trained to offer you the safest process possible.
Which EPL is best for Hair Removal?
At IVORY, we currently use Phaser EPL technology which is FDA and Health Canada approved, and much safer than Laser light technology which can cause severe burns. Phaser EPL technology targets the hair follicle and bulb, leaving the skin intact, whereas Lasers, if not used properly, can cause major burns and injuries. There are a large variety of EPL machines on the market; however, our Licensed Medical Esthetician (LME) uses the most powerful and safest unit to date - The Phaser EPL.
Our Phaser EPL unit can reach up to 150 Joules. Joules are the energy that is delivered to destroy the hair follicle permanently; not enough energy and the hair follicle will not be destroyed. Most EPL units in the marketplace today only go up to 50J.
Please ask your current hair removal provider how many Joules their unit goes up to, and once you hear their answer, call and book your appointment with us!

Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; improve skin tone, texture, color and elasticity with chemical peels at IVORY Salon & Spa. Chemical peels are extraordinary treatments that can help repair a variety of skin problems and improve the overall look and feel of your skin. Depending on your needs, IVORY Salon & Spa offers an array of medical chemical grade peels ranging from the "lunch time peel" with no downtime to a deeper peelings with minimal downtimes varying on your personal skin requirements and goals. Chemical peels exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin, revealing a new skin layer with improved tone, texture and color. The stronger the peel, the deeper it penetrates into the skin for maximum cell renewal and collagen synthesis. Immediately after the first treatment, your skin will feel softer and smoother. This chemical peel is successfully used on the face, neck, hands and chest.
What Can a Chemical Peel Do For Me?
A Chemical Peel at IVORY Salon & Spa can:
- Smooth rough skin and improve its texture
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Eliminate brown splotches and age spots
- Improve the appearance of scars caused by acne
- Control acne breakouts
How long does it take to perform a chemical peel?
The chemical peel generally takes 30 minutes.
What can I expect following the chemical peel treatment?
Following the chemical peel treatment most patients immediately resume their normal activities. Most patients report that their skin feels softer and smoother. Most post-peel redness is slight and can be covered with makeup. Some patients may experience slight flaking in the few days following the peel treatment, but it is not necessary to see flaking skin for the peel to be effective.
Will I need more than one treatment?
This depends on what type of chemical peel is being used, the desired improvement wanted and the acceptable amount of discomfort and downtime. Generally, the process may take several chemical peel treatments over a period of time to achieve the best results.
Who is a candidate for a chemical peel?
The chemical peel can be applied to the face, neck, hands, and chest, and provides an excellent treatment option for a wide range of consumers who:
- are just beginning AHA treatments
- are currently using lower strength AHA products and have reached the "efficacy plateau" and want to "step up" to a higher free acid level
- would like the benefits of higher-strength products with little or no irritation
- have normal to sensitive skin
- want smoother and clearer skin
- have photo-damaged skin
How do I know which chemical peel treatment is right for me?
Your skin care professional will be trained on each of the PCA ProfessionalT Products. This training will allow them to not only choose a treatment designed for your skin type, but customize a treatment, addressing your personal skin care needs.
How much discomfort should be expected when having a peel?
The level of discomfort experienced depends on the treatment. Most PCA ProfessionalT chemical peels are gentle and create little or no burning or stinging sensation in the skin. Dramatic wrinkling, sun damage or acne scars may require a deeper peel, which may cause moderate stinging for a few minutes. More dramatic results can be expected from a deeper peel, however deep peels are not necessary for most skin types and conditions. PCA's philosophy of taking a low-dose approach means our superficial chemical peels create minimal discomfort and produce beautiful and immediate results for most patients.
Should people who are frequently in the sun receive peels?
Yes, but only if they are compliant with using sunscreen protection every day. Sunbathing should be avoided directly following a treatment and while the skin is peeling. If you are getting peels to lighten the skin, it is imperative to use the appropriate pHaze 13 Pigment GelR Dyschromia Controller (with HQ or HQ Free) followed by pHaze 6+ Hydrator Plus SPF 25 or pHaze 7 Protecting Hydrator SPF 25 and avoid unnecessary sun exposure to reduce any chance of further hyperpigmentation.
Which peels may be used on someone who exercises frequently?
Someone who is active may have any peel, but all peel patients must wait 48 hours after a treatment to exercise. If this is not an option, the Non-Burning Facial Peel or Intensive Vitamin C Treatment are alternate choices. These treatments use our Ultra PeelR II Exfoliating Treatment which is an acid-free retinol cream. Its delayed flaking action will not cause irritation or downtime, and leaves the skin glowing and hydrated.
Will a chemical peel make thin skin even thinner?
Dry skin is partially the result of dead cell buildup, which actually hinders natural exfoliation as well as the absorption and penetration of vitamins and nutrients. Having a PCA ProfessionalT chemical peel will remove surface buildup, hydrate the skin and give it a plumper, "thicker" appearance. The use of topical vitamin C and peptide products in a treatment, as well as in your daily care regimen will help build collagen in the skin, thus making it stronger and more durable.
